In this article I will explain you in 6 steps how to build this simple rocket mass heater made of bricks and rock blocks.

Take this plan as a hint and adapt it to your needs or to the material you already have, remember that the sizes are approximated to the nearest inch, naturally you can change the shape of the bench or cover the bricks with cob if you prefer.

The burning chamber

The picture shows how to place the bricks to build the base for an insulated burning chamber; this is where you put the fuel and where it will burn. The dimensions in the picture are approximated to the nearest inch for convenience. The disposal of the bricks is studied to reduce the contact between the burning chamber and the other bricks allowing the maximum space for insulation.

I used 9” x 4 1/2” x 2 1/2” common bricks to build the base and firebricks with the same dimensions for the areas subjected to high temperatures in order to avoid breakages. I choose thick bricks because they can store a large amount of heat necessary when you want to use your stove as a oven.

I didn’t use any clay or cement inside the burning chamber because it would surely come off after the first use but I used the clay mixture to secure the bricks from the outside.

I filled the empty spaces between the bricks with the expanded clay to ensure the maximum insulation of the burning chamber from the floor and from the rest of the stove. Instead of the expanded clay you can also use another inexpensive material as wood ash for example or insulating firebricks but in that case you will need to change the position of the bricks.

The feeding chamber is almost concluded, it’s 35” long with an 8” x 7” inlet. Remember that to guarantee a good operation need keep about the same section for all the ducts of the stove.

The heat riser

The heat riser is the most important part of a rocket mass heater, this is the engine, it creates the draft necessary to suck the air from the feeding chamber inlet and push the gases through the exhaust duct until the chimney. As showed in the picture I placed the bricks using a pattern in order to achieve the same section of the burning chamber inlet by cutting only one brick that you can recognize by the different color.

I placed the bricks over the burning chamber rotated by the shortest side because this area is subjected to breakages and I left the necessary space to host the water boiler.

The height of the heat riser is a fundamental parameter as it must create draft and it will determine the total height of the stove.

To secure the bricks of the heat riser I totally covered them up with a thin layer of clay mixture as you can see in the picture.

Build the shell

I used common bricks to build the external shell that wraps up the burning chamber: the empty space between them must be filled with expanded clay to avoid heat dispersions.

Heat riser insulation

As the word suggests the heat riser must produce a rise in temperature so it deserves an accurate insulation.

An easy and inexpensive way is to use a thin metallic wire mesh to wrap the heat riser and leave adequate space to fill with expanded clay.

The net lay on the base of the stove and over the burning chamber. I secured it around with metallic wire to contain the pressure of the expanded clay that will give the net almost a cylindric shape.

As you can see in the drawing I also placed the water boiler; the empty spaces under it must be filled with the clay mixture to avoid leaking smoke from the burning chamber. For more info about the water boiler read my post on how to heat the water with a rocket mass heater.

Then I covered all the refractory bricks and water boiler with expanded clay to ensure the maximum insulation and efficiency. The rocket mass heater needs operate at very high temperatures to work correctly so it’s vital to not dissipate the heat from the combustion chamber.

Clearly the water heater dissipates heat but you can choose when to use it just by moving the wood inwardly of outwardly; when the combustion point is after the water boiler the wood will burn at the maximum efficiency.

The radiator

The radiator essentially consists of a metallic barrel that instantly transfers the heat from the hot gases coming up from the heat riser to the ambience. The high thermal conductivity of metal gives to the rocket mass heater the ability to heat the room within few minutes after start up.

The top surface of the radiator can reach very high temperatures making it suitable for cooking.

It’s very important to clean accurately the barrel before using it in your stove to avoid the emission of toxic gases from paint residues. Initially I set a fire inside the barrel and I let it burn during some hours then I used a grinder with a metallic brush to remove any residues.

It’s time to build a solid base to support the radiator: I placed the bricks around the heat riser to form an octagon leaving about 2” of empty space between them; this is where the hot gases coming from the top of the heat riser will flows and will channel through the exit duct. For convenience I didn’t show it in the picture but clearly the burning chamber and the water heater must be totally covered with the expanded clay.

In the picture above the barrel is set in position and I made the top surface transparent to show you how all elements are positioned inside. The gap between the top of the radiator and the heat riser will significantly influence how the rocket mass heater works, its draft and the maximum temperature of the upper surface of the barrel. In the example I placed the barrel with a 2” gap; increasing the gap the temperature of the top surface of the barrel will decrease and vice versa.

Note that you cannot use a too short gap because you will choke the smoke flow causing problems with the draft. The area of the gap must be same or greater of the section area of the heat riser.

Around the barrel I built a curb where I can pour inside fine sand to seal up the radiator in order to avoid smoke leaks; this solution can be very practical for inspections because you can easily remove the barrel without dismount anything. Alternatively you can just seal up the barrel using the clay mixture if you prefer.

Exhaust system

The purposes of the exhaust system is leading the smokes out of the building while extracting as much heat as possible from them. Choosing the right material to build the exhaust duct is vital; the best would be to use one with high thermal conductivity capable of transmitting the maximum amount of heat to the bench.

Usually the majority of rocket mass heaters builders use stainless steel chimney pipes covered up with clay and others heavy materials such as bricks or stones. I think the steel pipes are too way expensive and It’s difficult to ensure a good thermal transfer between the surface of the pipes and the stones. Usually the clay mixture is used to connect them but clay is a not an exceptionally conductive material compared with some kind of rocks as you can see in the table below:

The thermal conductivity is the property of a material to conduct heat and the higher the coefficient the more it’s capable of transferring heat.

Another problem of steel pipes is that they are prone to get clogged with soot involving the installation of several inspection points along the duct raising even more the price (and the environmental impact). A masonry exhaust system is prone to clogging too but building some inspection points with bricks and clay wouldn’t costs so much.

I built the whole exhaust system of my stove using simple bricks with clay and during 3 years of usage I didn’t experience any problem of draft or smoke leaking nor I needed to do any maintenance. Naturally you have to check up the condition of the duct every year and perform appropriate cleaning when needed to prevent any possibility of fire.

I guess the best would be to use directly solid rock to build the exhaust duct as it can be pretty inexpensive and it does have a very high thermal conductivity. In order to build the best thermal battery It’s also very important to use rocks of the right size to make sure to capture all heat from the exhaust gases; using too small rocks after some hours of operation they wouldn’t be able to accumulate more heat resulting in a rising of the temperature of the smoke leaving the building.

In the drawing I used nice squared blocks but in the reality, unless you are willing to spend a considerable amount of money, you will have to deal with rocks of all shapes and sizes; to avoid smoke leaks you can seal them with the clay mixture. Remember that the most important thing to avoid smoke leaks is the presence of a constant draft; it not any sealing will be useless because the smoke can escape everywhere or at most from the feeding chamber.

It’s advisable to build a longer exhaust duct if you have the space or you can even twist it as a serpentine to occupy a wider space and extract more heat.

Since the bench will reach high temperatures especially near the radiator you can cover it by a layer of cob or clay mixture. If you like to spread the heat faster to the ambience you can leave some areas uncovered or if on the contrary you want to release the heat very slowly you can cover it all by a thick layer of cob or even wood (but pay attention to the temperatures).

In the drawing I connected the exit of the bench to a brick chimney. I prefer to use bricks instead of steel pipes because they can extract more heat from the exhaust gases and they don’t fear the condense produced by the low temperature smoke.

A rocket mass heater could work also with side-exit exhaust but it should be avoided when possible because it can bring a lot of problems under different conditions such as cold outdoor chimneys or wrong winds. To ensure the maximum draft in the worst conditions or when the stove is totally cold is better to use a conventional through-roof exhaust, if will pay off at the end. The last but not least important part of the exhaust system is the chimney cowl. A smoke back can be very dangerous with a rocket mass heater; it can very fast lead smoke inside the room through the feeding chamber or even make the flames escape from the inlet opening. The chimney should be installed in a position sheltered from the wind gusts and the chimney cowl must be wind proof. You must be sure that draft inversions will not occur. I have to say that I had a bad experience using spinner anti-draft chimney cowl because after few days the hub was galled by the condense so it’s better to use a fixed anti-draft chimney cowl.

Un supercap, detto anche supercondensatore o supercapacitor è un dispositivo che consente di accumulare energia elettrica. Funziona allo stesso modo di un normale condensatore con la differenza che riesce ad accumulare una quantità di energia molto maggiore.

Esso si comporta molto diversamente dalle batterie perché raggiunge la carica completa in pochissimo tempo (qualche secondo) e riesce a scaricare la sua energia istantaneamente. La durata del componente è stimata in milioni di cicli a differenza delle batterie (migliaia di cicli).

Il punto di forza del supercondensatore non è la quantità di energia immagazzinata ma con quale incredibile velocità può rilasciarla. Quell’energia, anche se poca, può essere erogata in una frazione di secondo, fornendo lo spunto di corrente elevatissimo necessario per l’avviamento del motore, soprattutto a basse temperature, aiutando così la batteria.

L’avviamento a freddo, specialmente di un motore diesel, rappresenta un forte stress per la batteria, la cui tensione può scendere anche a 10V.

Collegando dei supercap in parallelo alla batteria dell’auto fornirai un grosso aiuto alla batteria durante l’accensione preservandone la durata.

Scelta dei supercondensatori

E’ molto importante che la tensione nominale massima dei supercap sia leggermente maggiore a quella della batteria altrimenti potrebbero danneggiarsi o addirittura esplodere.

La batteria di un’auto quando è carica al massimo può superare i 14 V mentre i supercondensatori di solito sopportano solo 2.7 V quindi bisogna collegarne 6 in serie in modo da raggiungere 16.2 V (la tensione si somma). Questo ci lascia un margine di sicurezza rispetto alla tensione della batteria dell’auto.

Nel mio caso ho preferito acquistare su AliExpress un gruppo di 6 supercap già collegati in serie e muniti di fusibile pronti da installare.

Un’altro parametro da considerare è la capacità del condensatore: in questo ammonta a 500 Farad ognuno ma essendo collegati in serie per aumentare la tensione la capacità totale diminuisce a 500 / 6 = 83 F come puoi notare dall’etichetta sul prodotto.

Un elemento essenziale di questo prodotto è la schedina dove sono montati i supercondensatori. Si tratta di un BMS per supercap, cioè un Battery Management System specifico per supercondensatori. Il bms equilibra la tensione di ogni componente per evitare che un singolo supercap si sovraccarichi o si scarichi troppo. Questo è fondamentale per la durata del modulo.

Caricamento iniziale del modulo supercap

Questo passo è importantissimo per non danneggiare i componenti infatti se collegassi direttamente il supercondensatore scarico (0V) alla batteria (12.6V), la batteria riverserebbe immediatamente una corrente enorme nei condensatori danneggiandoli. Anche la batteria può venire danneggiata da una scarica così profonda.

La regola d’oro per collegare in parallelo fonti di energia (come una batteria e un supercondensatore) è: le loro tensioni devono essere il più possibile identiche prima di effettuare il collegamento.

Quindi prima di tutto con un multimetro devi verificare la tensione della batteria auto per sapere a quale tensione devi portare i supercap.

La prima carica del modulo supercap deve essere effettuata molto lentamente magari usando un’alimentatore regolabile da laboratorio erogando una corrente di 1-2 A e regolando la tensione con quella della batteria. Oppure potresti anche usare uno di quei alimentatori universali regolabili, l’importante è che alla fine i supercap raggiungano una tensione uguale o molto simile a quella della batteria.

Quando la corrente di carica scende a zero la carica dovrebbe essere completata. Verifica con il multimetro il voltaggio ai capi dei terminali del modulo supercap.

Collegamento in parallelo

Ora che sia la batteria che i supercap hanno la stessa tensione puoi tranquillamente collegare i cavi sui morsetti della batteria prestando molta attenzione a rispettare la polarità.

E’ importantissimo interporre un fusibile fra il positivo del modulo condensatori e la batteria per garantire una protezione in caso di errori di collegamento o cortocircuiti.

Nel modulo che ho acquistato da AliExpress il fusibile era già presente e collegato quindi il montaggio è stato veramente semplice.

Se in futuro dovessi cambiare la batteria o scollegarla ricordati sempre di verificare che le tensione sia uguale a quella del modulo supercap prima di ricollegarla.

Accensione

Questo sistema ti permette di andare avanti anche con una batteria vecchia, diciamo che la mia era quasi da buttare.

Infatti come puoi vedere dal video, dopo aver acceso il quadro la tensione della batteria si trova a 12.6 V e scende a 11.4 V dopo che si sono attivati la pompa del carburante, il riscaldamento delle candelette e tutto il resto.

Durante l’accensione la tensione della batteria scende addirittura a 10 V, eppure si verifica una partenza perfetta grazie all’energia proveniente dai supercap.

Ho riutilizzato cavi, scatole di derivazione, morsetti, viti, rivetti, canaline e guaine per cavi.

Caratteristiche dell’impianto

Impianto off-grid da 4.6 KWp composto da 20 pannelli da 230 Wp installati su una tettoia, zona centro Italia, azimuth 0°, inclinazione 30°.

Ho scelto di acquistare pannelli solari usati soprattutto perché non avevo vincoli di spazio. Il mio obiettivo era realizzare una tettoia e non mi interessava massimizzare la resa in watt per metro quadrato (W/m²).

Credo che per un impianto del genere la cifra sia irrisoria, senza considerare il fatto che la tettoia solare mi ha offerto uno spazio coperto aggiuntivo. Quei soldi non sarebbero sufficienti nemmeno per acquistare una tettoia nuova (senza i pannelli) di quella metratura, quindi posso ritenermi molto soddisfatto!

Produzione impianto 2025

Ho calcolato un costo dell’energia di 0.25 € per KWh basandomi sul costo medio delle ultime bollette del distributore.

La produzione nei primi 3 mesi è stata piuttosto bassa perché inizialmente l’impianto consisteva soltanto di 8 pannelli a cui ne ho aggiunti altri 12 nel mese di Settembre.

• Giugno: 120 KWh x 0.25 = 30 €

• Luglio: 170 KWh x 0.25 = 42.5 €

• Agosto: 191 KWh x 0.25 = 42.5 €

• Settembre: 249 KWh x 0.25 = 62.25 €

Quindi un totale di 730 KWh prodotti per un risparmio sulla bolletta di 182.5 €. Diciamo che finora mi sono ripagato l’inverter.

Previsione produzione annuale

Basandomi sulla produzione di Settembre (quando l’installazione era completa) con l’aiuto dei simulatori online ho calcolato una produzione annuale di 2766.67 KWh per un risparmio di 691.67 € che mi consentirebbe di rientrare nell’investimento in un paio di anni.

E’ importante notare comunque che la produzione potenziale dell’impianto sarebbe molto maggiore. Infatti molta energia semplicemente non viene utilizzata perché non ci sono abbastanza carichi collegati o la batteria è spesso piena.

Così ho usato il simulatore PVGIS (Photovoltaic Geographical Information System), che fornisce dati dettagliati sulla produttività degli impianti fotovoltaici in tutta Europa. Ho immesso i dati del mio impianto con una potenza ridotta del 20% dato che i pannelli sono usati e il simulatore ha previsto una produzione annuale di 4818 KWh che mi porterebbero un risparmio di ben 1204.5 €.

Continuerò a registrare i dati sulla produzione del mio impianto in questo foglio di calcolo.

Macinare il caffè al momento della preparazione è un lusso a cui non voglio rinunciare e questi antichi macinini lo fanno alla perfezione. L’unico neo è il tempo richiesto per smanovellare ad ogni caffè (ne prendo almeno 3 al giorno). Così ho pensato che se un motorino elettrico poteva fare il lavoro al posto mio potevo ottimizzare i tempi lavando e preparando la moka nel frattempo.

Il motore elettrico

Mi sono subito messo alla ricerca di un motorino elettrico adatto allo scopo, che non è stato banale, perché la rotazione della manovella richiede una coppia non indifferente. Alla fine ho optato per questo motorino da 12V molto robusto acquistato su AliExpress. Si tratta di un motore a ingranaggi planetari con una coppia massima di ben 50 kg!

L’albero di uscita è molto spesso (8mm) e la sua forma mi ha permesso di collegarlo facilmente all’albero del macinino. Ho scelto la versione da 86 RPM che mi fornisce una coppia nominale di 6 kg.cm e una coppia massima (per brevi periodi) di 20 kg.cm. La potenza del motore è di 10 W, pagato 17,39 € su AliExpress spedizione inclusa.

Smontaggio

Per prima cosa ho smontato tutto e ho prelevato solo la parte che mi interessava, la macina. Questo è ciò che rimane del vecchio macinino!

Il vaso di raccolta del caffè

Un’altra cosa che non mi piaceva del macinacaffè tradizionale era il cassetto di legno che spesso non riusciva bene a raccogliere tutto il caffè che scendeva dalla macina. Inoltre era scomodo da svuotare e da pulire cosi ho deciso di sostituirlo con un comodo barattolo di vetro che posso svitare e avvitare sulla macina. Ho scelto un piccolo barattolo della passata di pomodori sotto cui ho incollato un foglio di sughero per evitare che scivoli durante la macinazione.

Per poterlo fissare sotto la macina e rimuoverlo con facilità ho sfruttato il coperchio originale del barattolo. In questo modo basta semplicemente svitare per separare la macina dal vasetto. Ho creato un grande foro al centro del coperchio per far passare l’elemento della macina e due fori piccolini ai lati per far passare le viti che fisseranno tutto.

Montaggio del motorino elettrico

Per collegare l’albero della macina a quello del motorino ho usato un tubo di ferro dove ho praticato due fori filettati per avvitare le viti che stringeranno entrambe le estremità degli alberi sulla parte piatta.

Questo morsetto autocostruito permette di assicurare le due parti senza alcuna possibilità di slittamento ed è facilmente smontabile per la manutenzione.

Ho lasciato intatto il sistema di regolazione della macina che consente di ottenere una macinatura più fine o più grossa. Una volta terminata la regolazione ho assicurato la ghiera con una fascetta di plastica anche se era già presente il fermo originale per essere sicuro al 100% che non si muovesse col tempo.

Sotto la ghiera ho dovuto aggiungere degli spessori composti da un pezzetto di tubo di rame e tre rondelle.

Per evitare che il motore girasse su se stesso ho dovuto collegarlo all’imbuto della macina ma la sfida maggiore era consentire la rotazione garantendo un certo grado di libertà per compensare le inevitabili imprecisioni dell’albero della macina.

Così per tenere fermo il motore ho usato un una striscia di lamiera fissandola con due viti al corpo del motore.

Ho forato le estremità del lamierino per infilare due fascette di plastica assicurate all’imbuto grazie alla fascetta di ferro per tubi.

Alimentazione

Per alimentare il motore elettrico ho usato un vecchio alimentatore a 12V 500mA che già possedevo. Forse è un pò piccolino per la potenza del motore ma lo stò usando da molto tempo e non mi ha mai dato problemi. Sicuramente sarebbe meglio usare un’alimentatore da 1 Ampere almeno.

Per collegarlo al motore basta tagliare il connettore finale dell’alimentatore, spellare i fili e saldarli con un saldatore a stagno sui terminali del motore stando bene attenti a rispettare la polarità.

Per l’accensione e spegnimento ho utilizzato semplicemente una presa con interruttore incorporato così quando spengo non lascio l’alimentatore sotto tensione.

Sono molto soddisfatto del risultato e usandolo tutti i giorni mi sta regalando grandi soddisfazioni, gira lentamente e non scalda il caffè, non c’è alcun paragone con i macinacaffè a lame economici che vendono adesso.
